I recommend watching his pinned video, “What Cancer taught me”:
Rest in Peace, James, and love to your family.
He talked openly about his cancer & wanted to inspire us to get checked and find love for self and all.
So yes: may his too-early passing inspire & motivate millions of us to get checked. RIP, & love to your beautiful family.
Please: everybody who’s reading this, schedule regular cancer checkups.

A few comments worth reading, below. ~ ed.
Wow that is terrible. I feel so sad for his wife and kids. His wife really seemed to love him so much and I think they have like 6 kids that she will now raise on her own.
~
And he had to sell his memorabilia to pay for treatment. Even though he worked steadily, the insurance issue fucked him over (like Shannon Doherty too).
Paul Walter Hauser is raising money for the family bc it didn’t sit right with him that JVB had to sell things that should have gone to his children to pay for treatment.
Universal Healthcare NOW!!!!

SAG needs to change their policy for insurance too. In both of these cases the actors lost insurance because they couldn’t work anymore and there is a minimum they must work to keep it.
~
This is why Angela Lansbury helping lots of older actors got roles on Murder, She Wrote so they could earn enough for insurance purposes is one of my favorite related stories here. Some people spoke about that after she died, I think. I don’t think it was officially official but I believe it.
Though, we should all have universal healthcare.

It was official 🙂 specifically Madlyn Rhue who played the Cabot Cove librarian. She had m.s.
I remember seeing some things about this but I didn’t remember where I saw the confirmations, but thank you. 🙂 That show always reminds me of my grandma since she loved it and I remember watching with her. We also used to watch old films together so seeing those folks turn up was always a delight.

(I have MS myself and that sounds familiar so I probably did see that before)

Statement from his family posted by Variety:
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
Highly recommend watching his pinned post on insta titled “what cancer taught me”

Everybody who’s reading this
Please have regular cancer checkups
Someone close to me had the same and it metastasized to their lungs and liver.
~
I’ve had two coworkers who had colorectal cancer that spread to their livers. One battled for close to a decade. The other just had half of their liver removed. It’s awful.

Colorectal cancer is one of the fastest growing among people under fifty. Get ur poop swab. And don’t necessarily have big symptoms until very late.
The most protective thing young people can do for their colorectal cander risk is eat fiber. Adults should be eating 25-30 grams of fiber daily. Bonus! It also helps you poop.
~
So sad. Colorectal cancer is one cancer that is very often cured as long as it’s caught early. 🙁
So many young people are getting diagnosed with it!
~
Yes! I think health care systems need to lower the recommended age for screenings to start. My dad had it at only 48, the same age as James, although in his case it was caught early and he is thankfully fine.
