20 Years from Now. {Poem}

I’m sitting on the floor and you’re playing right next to me.

You jump on my back and tell me to get up.

I get up.

I hold you tight.

I rest my head on yours.

You cling to my shoulders and look at me. I peak at the mirror and see you smiling.

I smile.

I laugh.

You laugh.

I pace around the house and feel your ankles tapping on my waist.

I enjoy the present moment. I stop thinking. I breathe. I feel your heartbeat on my back.

I put you down. You tell me “more.”

My back hurts, but my heart doesn’t. So I get up once more and hold you even tighter.

I don’t want to put you down—ever.

I realize you will never be that little again. You will never be that innocent again. I will never be that young again.

But I wonder…

Will you remember this exact moment?

Twenty years from now, I will.

Twenty years from now, I’ll look back in time and wish to go back to that place, to that moment, and relive it again.

Twenty years from now, we’ll look at this photo together and wonder how life flies by. I’ll cry. You’ll cry. We’ll cry.

I hope you’ll hold my wrinkly hand and ask me about that day. I might not remember the details, but I’ll remember your little body and infectious laugh.

Twenty years from now, you’ll look different, but my love for you will be the same. You will be big, but my love for you will be bigger.

Twenty years from now, I might not be physically here anymore, but that photo will. I hope you’ll look at it every now and then and remember…me.
